Greenest cars ranked by American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy

Usually we do not write about cars here but when looked at the most recent ACEEE rankings found it really interesting. To our surprise the greenest car at the top of the list is not completely electric: Toyota Prius Prime SE, which is plug-in hybrid.
Actually 4 out of top 10 are hybrids. Distribution across brand is also interesting but may be not that much surprising. There are 5 vehicles manufactured by Toyota Corporation (we include Lexus into this count as a brand name owned by Toyota), 3 from Hyundai (including Kia), Mini Cooper and Nissan also present with one model each.
ACEEE methodology goes beyond just assessing car emission but also includes but also analyze vehicle mass and battery mass and composition. Latter is the reason for some of electric vehicles being closer to the bottom of the list. Hearing a lot about Tesla being on the front end of saving the planet it can be considered a slight disappointment to see best ranked Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD showing the score of 57. At the same ranks with gasoline powered cars like Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. And Tesla Model 3 has scored 2 points lower.
It is great to see a confirmation that Toyota not only making waves in the media about what they do but really execute on the promises. Worth noting that fuel-cell vehicles like Toyota Mirai were not ranked. When looking at the fuel efficiency numbers published by ACEEE, Mirai will be somewhere close to top 10 if not in the range of those ranks.
